I have been struggling to write out how this publication came to be. It’s not that I don’t know the story, I do as I lived it. It’s that it isn’t easy to distill down to a few paragraphs an explanation. Nor is it easy to do justice to the story. It is somehow simple and complex at the same time. So, I will keep it simple.
I started the Twitter account @unmitigatedAss in October of 2021. My previous account still existed, but with the heightened tensions from covid and the disagreements around protocols, I felt I had to ditch it in order to start anew, and not rock the IRL boat. Then I started posting.
Within a short time, I had started to find my groove. My account grew incrementally, and I started finding people with similar interests and outlooks. Many were found in the comment sections of Jordan Peterson and James Lindsay. This led to more interesting people and more people following me back.
Then, a few months ago, one of my long-term mutuals -one I hold in very high regard- put out a post asking for help. She was hoping that more people would subscribe to her Substack in order for her to make a bit more money. She does high quality research, and the plea did not sit right with me.
I thought about what I could do. And the only thing I could really afford was to use my skills. I am good at getting attention. I am good at gathering and organizing people. I have a bit of business and marketing acumen. So, I messaged a friend from twitter to set up a phone call and chatted it out.
The idea was simple. It is just to set up and manage a substack that acts to highlight the people I like. I want to put focus on the hardworking research/history/philosophy subculture that I somehow found myself in. I wanted to help my friends. And this is what that is.
What should you expect from this publication? You should expect honest posts. You should expect that the people involved with making them are searching for the truth. You should also expect mistakes; we are not perfect. You should also expect differences of opinion.
If you take what we put up here, match it to your own experience, check it to your research, you should find that it is damn close to reality. That’s the name and the goal: to find and share that truth that most corresponds with reality.
Welcome aboard.
